FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Police with the state Division of Natural Resources and other law enforcement are looking for a boat involved in a hit-and-run Saturday afternoon on the Tygart River in Marion County in which a 22-year-old swimmer was injured.
According to the DNR, the man was struck on the east side bank of the river about a half-mile south of the Benton’s Ferry Bridge at around 4:35 p.m. Eyewitnesses said the boat slowed down after the impact but then headed north toward the bridge.
Investigators are looking for what’s been described as a white runabout speed boat that may have had yellow zig-zag markings on its side. Eyewitnesses believe there were approximately five middle-aged men in the boat.
The swimmer suffered serious injuries and is being treated at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
The DNR is seeking the public’s help in identifying the boat. They are asked to call the Marion County 911 Center at 304-367-5300 or the DNR District 1 Headquarters in Farmington 304-825-6787.
