Family of missing Evansville woman Dawnita Wilkerson looking for answers - Courier & Press

EVANSVILLE, Ind — Dawnita Wilkerson is a talker.

The 44-year-old mother of six has daily phone calls with friends and family. It's one of her favorite ways to pass the time.

"She's just really laid back," said Kiahnna Wilkerson, one of her daughters. "As long as she was with friends having fun, she was good."

So when no one heard from her for a few hours one day in late June, they knew something wasn't right.

Dawnita was reported missing in the mid-afternoon on June 22. Her 15-year-old daughter was the last to see her the day before.

Since then, the family has been on an emotional roller coaster.

"Stressful. Scary," aunt Nora Martin said of her feelings over the past few weeks. "At times you're hopeful; at times you're mad. We've spent a lot more time together because we go out daily hanging flyers just trying to get the word out there."

"Not knowing makes it hard," she added.

The family has been in contact with police departments in Indiana and Illinois. They met with detectives last week for a debriefing on the case, although they're not authorized to discuss many details in fear of harming law enforcement efforts.

"This is an active criminal case," Nora said. "They do have suspects. There's a chance that she crossed state lines, and they're obtaining or have obtained warrants for social media accounts, phone records and things like that."

Police have a few leads, but the family said they're still left with many unanswered questions. They're continuing to work hard to find Dawnita.

"As a family, we've reached out to as many people and places as possible, and we're still finding new places to reach out to," Nora said.

Dawnita is a Black woman standing at 5'3" tall and weighing approximately 145 pounds. Police and family members are urging anyone with information about her whereabouts to contact EPD's Adult Investigative Unit at 812-436-7979 or call the We Tip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME (1-800-782-7463).
