With no 2020 NY State Fair, director looking at ‘what we can do’ - syracuse.com

Geddes, N.Y. — Fair Director Troy Waffner said canceling the 2020 New York State Fair — which would have brought more than 1 million fairgoers to the fairgrounds amid the coronavirus — was the right call.

“At the end of the day, it’s the right announcement,” Waffner said of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s decision today to cancel the 18-day fair.

“Am I sad? Yes,” Waffner said. “Do I understand why? Absolutely.”

Waffner said the fair staff is looking at what events the fairgrounds might host instead of the fair. That could include more low-impact sporting competitions. The fairgrounds is hosting two horse shows later this year, he said.

Already, some fair vendors have set up drive-thru food and beverage stands, even as much of the economy was shutdown.

Waffner said he would have more details in a couple of weeks.

The last time the fair was canceled was in the 1940s, when the fairgrounds was used as military base.

The fair is a state operation that pays for itself. Already, Waffner said, deposits are being returned to vendors. He said the fair has enough money in its budget to make payroll “for the foreseeable future.”

And, he added, the staff has work to do. Planning each fair takes longer than a year, so now attention can turn to the 2021 fair, he said.

“The goal is to be the biggest and best fair,” Waffner said. “The governor can expect the biggest and best and craziest fair he’s ever seen in 2021.”
