Gunman shot, killed breaking into Pasco home looking for estranged wife, sheriff says - Tampa Bay Times

LAND O’ LAKES — An armed man who broke into a home Saturday looking for his estranged wife was shot and killed by the homeowner, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

The armed man was identified as Ronald Fleet, 55.

Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco said the shooting was a case of self-defense.

“He was defending himself and his family,” Nocco said.

The incident took place at about 12:30 p.m. in the Sunset Lakes subdivision near U.S. 41 and State Road 54. The estranged wife was staying there with her family. The sheriff gave this account of the shooting:

Fleet, armed with a .380-caliber handgun, began to kick in the door. The homeowner armed himself. There were other family members inside the house at the time.

Once Fleet entered the home, the homeowner started shooting, the sheriff said. Fleet fired a round, then exited the house. The homeowner stopped shooting. Then Fleet “starts charging into the house,” Nocco said. The homeowner fired again, fatally wounding Fleet.

“We believe that the motive and his rage was that he was upset this family was supporting his estranged wife during the divorce proceedings,” Nocco said.

No one else was injured. The Sheriff’s Office did not identify the homeowner or anyone else who was inside the house at the time of the shooting. The agency did not say what kind of weapon the homeowner used or how many times it was fired.

The incident remains under investigation and no other details were released.
