Nia Sharif voted Saturday for the first time — to a chorus of cheers.
Sharif, 21, joined about a hundred others who had just marched from Trenton’s War Memorial to the Official Election Ballot Drop Box located behind City Hall in a non-partisan “March to the Ballot Box” city event.
The event was hosted by Mayor W. Reed Gusciora, North Ward District 5 Committeewoman Crystal Feliciano, and Bernard McMullan, President of the Trenton Council of Civic Associations.
“Personally, after having voted I feel like my ancestors are looking down at me and they are proud,” Sharif said. “I did something that they fought so hard for us all to be able to do.”
In a fashion not dissimilar to celebrities walking the red carpet at a Hollywood opening, voters were showered with encouragement as they walked down a slanted walkway leading to the drop box, one of 4 located throughout the city.
Some walked alone. Some brought their children. Some brought their pets. But everyone voted with enthusiasm.
“During the July 2020 primary election, there was only one secure drop box in the entire Capital City,” said Mayor Gusciora. “Now we have four... making it easier than ever for our residents to express their right to vote by proactively completing and returning their ballots.”
The program at the War Memorial featured a variety of speakers including another first-time voter, Darrin Clark.
“For people who are just turning 18 like myself, it is especially important to vote because it will ultimately decide how things will turn out for the rest of our lives," said Clark, a 2020 graduate of Trenton Central High School. "Think about it. You have the power to change history. Get out here and make a change by voting.”
Speaker Dante Thomas, who was formerly incarcerated, said change begins with the voters.
“Each person has to do something to make change come,” he said. "So for the brothers and sisters thats like me, they got a background, now is your time. The opportunity is yours. Take advantage of it.”
