Lions looking to trade Matthew Stafford; 49ers logical suitors - San Francisco Chronicle

The 49ers were in the Super Bowl a year ago.

Now, they could be in the Stafford Bowl.

The Lions and quarterback Matthew Stafford have agreed to split and Detroit will explore trade possibilities in the coming weeks, the NFL Network reported.

The 49ers figure to inquire about Stafford, 32, who ranks among the top 20 in NFL history in completions, passing yards and touchdown passes.

Stafford is more proven and durable than 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, 29, who has missed 23 of 48 games with injuries the past two seasons and has 32 career starts in a seven-year career.

Stafford, a 12-year veteran, started every game in nine of the past 10 seasons. The exception was 2019, when he missed eight games because of a back injury. That ended his streak of 136 starts, the seventh longest by a QB in NFL history.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have declined to unequivocally commit to Garoppolo, only offering that they expect him to be their 2021 starter. Last month, Shanahan said it would take a significant upgrade to get them to move on from Garoppolo.

“You look into every avenue,” Shanahan said, “and you see if there’s something out there that can get you a ton better.”

Stafford, who turns 33 on Feb. 7, has eight 4,000-yard seasons, five more than the 49ers have had in franchise history.

Stafford’s contract is affordable. If traded, he would count $20 million against the salary cap in 2021 and $23 million in 2022. Garoppolo is scheduled to have a $26.9 million cap hit in 2021. The 49ers would absorb a $2.8 million dead-cap hit if he were released or traded.

It’s not known how the 49ers value Stafford or if they would part with their No. 12 pick in a trade. The Lions, who just hired general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell, have the No. 7 pick and could take Stafford’s replacement. In that case, it’s unlikely they would be interested in acquiring Garoppolo.

The 49ers beat the Lions 30-27 in Week 2 in 2018, when Stafford threw for 347 yards with three touchdowns. With Detroit trailing 30-13, Stafford threw for two scores in the fourth quarter and the Lions had possession down three points with 1:08 left.

“Stafford’s got a great chance to get them back in the game with how good he is,” Shanahan said the day after the game.

The Colts, Bears, Panthers, Saints, Patriots, Broncos and Washington are among the teams who could also have interest in Stafford. Teams can begin discussing trades, but deals can’t become official until the start of the league year on March 17.
