Looking Back: Jan. 14 - Times Union

During a clash between picketing strikers and workers at the plant of the Sweet & Doyle foundry in Green Island, shots were fired but no one was injured, at least from the guns. The fight started when 50 men from Schenectady arrived in Green Island to join the striking workers on the picket line. It continued until members of Troop B, State Troopers, arrived on the scene and the crowd dispersed.

Although the gunfire resulted in no casualties, several men were hurt in the confrontation, including brothers Charles and Joseph Dorkski, who were set upon by a mob and beaten as they approached the foundry. A third man, Joseph Slorse, was beaten by a crowd near the gates of the plant. All three men were treated by Dr. William E. Silcock for abrasions and bruises.

Thruway bathrooms: A right?

The state’s highest court was pondering the question of whether everybody had a right to go to the bathroom at a Thruway service area.

The issue argued before the Court of Appeals involved the constitutionality of any regulation which denied to any member of the motoring public any of the facilities at New York State Authority service stops.

The use of restrooms at an Ulster County service area on a weekend by charter bus passengers had resulted in the arrest of eight bus drivers. “Closed to charter buses, midnight Friday to midnight Sunday,” read the sign at the Ruby Hot Shoppe in the town of Ulster on Aug. 16, 1968.

As the eight charter buses pulled into the parking lot, their drivers were arrested by a state trooper. Justice Sherwood E. Davis held that the Thruway Authority resolution authorizing the closing of restaurants, restrooms and parking facilities to charter buses was discriminatory and unconstitutional.
