MASSAC COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL) -- A hit-and-run took the life of a Massac County man in Macon, Georgia. His family is now mourning his loss and looking for answers.
Those who knew William Pope describe him as one of a kind.
"He never went five minutes without grinning or popping a joke or doing something to make somebody else laugh or smile," said William Pope's brother Douglas Pope.
Pope is also known as a free spirit so when family members saw found out through the news William Pope was killed in a hit-and-run, in Macon, Georgia, they were shocked.
"When one of his friends Anna called, and when she called, I knew it was him. I mean she didn't have to say anything, I knew it was him," said William Pope's mother Delilah Pope.
"Just shocking and surreal. I guess is kind of the best way to put it," said Douglas Pope.
Knowing very little about what happened members of the Pope family traveled to Macon.
Once in Macon they visited the Jeffersonville road, the place investigators told them a truck hit Pope and left him for dead.
"We have questions that as far as I can tell right now as far as it looks right now, they may just go unanswered," said Douglas Pope.
As the family works to piece together what happened to Pope, a family friend started a go-fund-me account to help them with funeral and legal expenses.
"It's a lot for any family to deal with, so I wanted to be a support to her, however, I could being as far away from her as I am," said the organizer of the William Pope go fund me account.
Both Delilah and Doug Pope said they are thankful Candra Kennedy made the account but said they still need to know what happened to William in the early hours of November 10.
"I'm still in the middle of it. It's like I can't start healing or truly grieving because I've got to be on guard. I've got to be, trying to figure out what happened," said Delilah Pope.
