Leaders in Hempfield Area School District want to bolster their Student to Career Partnership initiative after the program was impacted by the covid-19 pandemic.
The district is accepting survey responses from businesses and organizations interested in participating in the initiative, which offers several programs to students to help prepare for their future career paths. In addition, the district is looking to re-engage with community partners previously involved with the program.
“Exposing students to career paths and training will help them make informed decisions and allow them to plan accordingly,” said Sara Lang, a school counselor at the district. “As well, our business partners benefit by creating a lasting impact on the future of our region and economy.”
Through the program, businesses and students can engage in classroom presentations, post-secondary informational panel discussions, career cafes and fairs, mentorships, internships and more. The goal is to offer career programs that serve as talent pools for local businesses, which can lead to future careers for students.
In addition to combating workforce challenges, the program also is aimed at showing students there are job opportunities in Westmoreland County.
“Our goal is to promote Westmoreland County and Hempfield Township as a great place to reside and work,” Lang said. “Our students need to learn about career opportunities so they can plan for their future in hopes they plan to make Hempfield Township their forever home. Even if students plan to leave the area, it is our responsibility to make sure they are prepared.”
Lang said the program has been around for several years. In that time, collaborations have been made with the Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board, the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce and the Westmoreland County Forum for Workforce Development.
More than 50 companies and post-secondary organizations also have signed up to participate within the school system, Lang said.
Organizations interested in partnering with the district can fill out the survey online. Once the survey is submitted, Lang will reach out to determine which programs they would be interested in participating in.
