Cowboys host Cougars looking to get back into win column - McNeese State University Athletics - McNeese Athletics

LAKE CHARLES - McNeese basketball returns home on Monday when the Cowboys host Carver College at 6:30 p.m. in Burton Coliseum.

The game will broadcast live on Magic 92.1 and also via stream on Cowboy Insider.

The Cowboys (1-3) are coming off an 85-46 loss at LSU last Thursday in a game that saw freshman transfer Christian Shumate break-out with his first-career double-double with team highs of 12 points and 15 rebounds.

That rebounding output has lifted Shumate to the No. 2 ranking in the Southland Conference in the category with an 8.0 per game average. He's also third in the league with 1.5 blocked shots per game.

Brendan Medley-Bacon tops the Cowboys in scoring with an 11.3 mark, ranking ninth in the conference while Myles Lewis is averaging 10.5 points per game and is 17th in the SLC.

Long range shooter Harwin Francois will enter Monday night's game ranked tied for third in the conference with 2.5 threes made per game, tied for second with 10 total three-pointers made, and fourth in 3FG shooting at 35.7 percent.

T.J. Moss is sixth in the league with 2.3 treys per contest and is tied for eighth in the league with a 2.8 assist per game average while Kellon Taylor is seventh in steals with a 1.8 average to go along with 2.5 assists per game to rank 11th.

As a team, the Cowboys are averaging 71.3 points per game. Defensively, McNeese is third in the league in field goal percent defense by holding opponents to a 41.6 game mark and ranked second in the Southland with 42.3 rebounds per game.

Additionally, McNeese is No. 1 in the conference with 5.8 blocked shots per game, first with 12.5 steals and third with 15.8 assists per game.

McNeese and Carver College have played just once before, that coming last December when the Cowboys posted a 96-53 win over the Cougars.

Following Monday's game, the Cowboys will travel to Florida for bracket play in the Emerald Coast Classic where they'll play St. Francis-Brooklyn in the opening round on Friday at 11 a.m. followed by a Saturday game against either Samford or North Carolina A&T at either 10 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. in Niceville, Florida.
