Quincy Williams looking to step out of brother's shadow in bigger Jets role - New York Post

HOUSTON — When Quincy Williams was drafted by the Jaguars in the third round of the 2019 draft, he heard plenty of “that’s Quinnen Williams’ brother.”

For Quincy Williams, he set out to make a name for his own.

“I just put that as a chip on my shoulder, like I had to make a name for myself,” said Quincy, now a Jets linebacker. “I use it as ammunition.”

He turned some heads in last week’s loss to the Dolphins. Williams had 15 tackles in the game, the most by a Jets defender since David Harris had 17 in a game against the Bills in 2009 (per Stathead).

Williams started five games early in the season then went to the bench for three games when Jarrad Davis returned from injury. The Jets decided to start Williams over Davis last week, and it paid off. Williams flew around the field and gave the defense energy with his big hits.

“My number one thing is just running through people,” Williams said. “That’s the main thing. At first, the crowd ‘Oohs.’ I love that. Then it was my teammates that get hyped about it. They like, we know the speed of the game. So, it’s basically me setting the tone for my teammates and then my teammates rallying behind me. I love that part of it.”

The Jets claimed Williams when the Jaguars cut him at the end of training camp. Williams has shown growth since and is emerging from the shadow of Quinnen, the Jets’ first-round pick in 2019.

“He’s got obviously the athleticism, the explosiveness, the speed and all of that,” defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich said of Quincy. “He’s also got instinct that’s really rare. He can’t always articulate what he sees, but he sees it and he reacts. At the same time, he’s a hitter. Some guys just they understand how to unlock their hip at the point of contact and the timing and all that and the aggression that he has is really unique. He’s got some stuff. He is a guy that is so far from what he will become. Not even close to being a finished product. He’s got a long way to go and we’re excited about him.”

The Jets placed RB Michael Carter (ankle) on injured reserve, meaning he’ll miss at least three games. … The Jets elevated QB Josh Johnson, DE Jabari Zuniga, DE Ronnie Blair and RB Austin Walter from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.

The Jets downgraded WR Corey Davis’ status for Sunday’s game with the Texans to doubtful. Davis injured his groin in practice Wednesday. He missed practice Thursday but practiced on a limited basis Friday, and Jets coach Robert Saleh said it looked like Davis would be able to play. In his first season with the Jets, Davis has already missed two games due to a hip injury. He has 32 catches for 477 yards and four touchdowns this season.

The Jets will be without senior offensive assistant Matt Cavanaugh on Sunday due to COVID-19 protocols. Quarterbacks coach Rob Calabrese will assume Cavanaugh’s responsibilities.
