A company that makes natural products for babies has recalled about 10,500 bottles and cups after learning children could be exposed to material containing lead if the base breaks off, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
Green Sprouts Inc. voluntarily recalled the products after realizing that the base of some of its stainless-steel bottles and cups can break and expose soldering that contains lead, the commission said. Lead is toxic if ingested by young children and can have adverse health effects.
Green Sprouts has received seven reports of incidents of the bottles’ base breaking off, according to the commission. No injuries have been reported since the Nov. 23 recall was issued, the agency said.
In a statement on its website, Green Sprouts said it wasn’t aware that a component containing lead could become accessible in its stainless-steel straw bottles, sippy cups and sip-and-straw cups.
“Now that we know, we are voluntarily recalling these products,” the Asheville, N.C.-based company said. “We are undertaking the costs and challenges of this recall voluntarily because our customers’ health and safety must come first.”
The part of the cups with the solder dot containing lead wouldn’t normally be accessible, so it wasn’t tested by the safety lab hired to vet the products as part of the manufacturing process, the company said.
“As we approach the redesign of these products…we will ensure that lead is not used as a soldering material, no matter whether it would be accessible,” Green Sprouts said.
The lids and spouts of affected products are still usable with other Green Sprouts cups and bottles, the company said.
The recalled products were available at Buy Buy Baby and Whole Foods stores as well as online at Amazon
from January 2020 through September 2022, according to the commission. The potentially hazardous products have tracking numbers 29218V06985, 35719V06985, and 33020V06985 stamped on the bottom of the base, the commission said.
The cups and bottles were sold in 6- and 8-ounce sizes in aqua, green, navy and pink.
Green Sprouts said it would issue a refund to customers who bought the products.
