In preparation for a birthday celebration, McDonald’s altered its social media account logos to feature a sleepy-eyed, furry purple thing about to drink a milkshake. Its name is Grimace, and it’s turning 52 years old. To celebrate, McDonald’s is launching a new purple-colored milkshake to pair with its limited-time Grimace birthday meal.
The promotion is not unlike the green milkshake the fast food company introduced on St. Patrick’s Day, in honor of Grimace’s uncle, Uncle O’Grimacey.
Grimace is a McDonald’s universe character created for young children to coax their parents into buying them fast food after seeing the ball of fluff on commercials or as toys.
However, Grimace was originally named Evil Grimace, when it debuted in 1971, and inadvertently scared kids — likely due to his scaly body with four arms — which was the opposite effect of what the McDonald’s marketing team had in mind. By 1973, Grimace was toned down and converted into a fuzzy purple blob with two arms who loved milkshakes and was best friends with Ronald McDonald.
Grimace’s birthday meal will include a choice of a Big Mac or 10 chicken McNuggets, medium-sized french fries and the purple milkshake. The shake will be a blended mixture of vanilla soft serve ice cream swirled with berry flavors, according to Today.com.
The Grimace birthday meal will be available at participating restaurants beginning June 12, until supplies last.
