FLORIDA - Amazon is looking to hire 100 people to operate a small "last mile" package distribution center on Route 5S just outside the city of Amsterdam.
The Montgomery County Planning Board approved the site site plan application referral from the town of Florida's planning board, the lead agency on the site plan approval process.
Amazon wants to use an existing 53,000-square-foot warehouse building at 1785 State Highway 5S for the facility, which would employ 100 people. The building was recently for sale for $1.5 million.
Montgomery County Executive Matthew Ossenfort said attracting Amazon is part of a larger effort by the county to attract other distribution and manufacturing companies.
"As other name-brand companies have before it, Amazon would find Montgomery County a wonderful place to call home," Ossenfort said. "An Amazon facility is a great opportunity for us to demonstrate how business, government and communities can work together to grow jobs, create opportunity and improve people’s quality of life."
Amazon is also building a full-scale, one-million-square-foot distribution facility in the town of Schodack. The "last mile" facility is more of a post-office like outpost for Amazon that gets packages to homes. The larger distribution facility sorts and packages items and serves as a warehouse for goods that Amazon sells.
The Daily Gazette reported on Amazon's interest in the site earlier this week.
A developer has also pitched building a one-million-square-foot distribution center near the same site that could also be a possible Amazon distribution center,
