New York Giants wide receiver Corey Coleman, who is seven months removed from suffering a torn ACL, is headed towards free agency and looking for nothing other than a “fair chance.”
“Just give me a chance,” Coleman said, via ESPN. “I’m not asking for anything. Just a fair chance and opportunity.”
After failing to live up to his first-round status in Cleveland, Coleman bounced around between the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots before landing with the Giants in October of 2018. By 2019, things seemed to finally click for Coleman, who entered the season in the best shape of his life.
Unfortunately for the 25-year-old Coleman, who was poised to serve as the team’s No. 3 wide receiver, he went down on the first day of training camp and never got that opportunity to revitalize his career.
“I was bummed. I was crying. I was devastated. I was like, ‘God, dang, why me?'” Coleman said. “I just didn’t understand.”
Coleman admitted to being down in the dumps for several weeks, but a conversation with his mother made him snap out of it.
“I can either sit here and stay down — or man up, attack this thing and come back better,” he said. “I set a goal. I’m going to be back better.
“The table has to turn. It has to. Keep on learning. And when my time comes, it’s going to be perfect timing.”
The good news for Coleman is that at least one NFL scout believes he’ll be given another opportunity. The bad news? He may only have on chance left.
“Somebody is going to give him an opportunity, even if he has to go on the workout junket for a little bit,” a pro personnel scout with an NFC team said. “I would be very surprised if he doesn’t get that opportunity. But, he is running out of time. This might be the last chance.”
If nothing else, a more matured Coleman believes in himself and is putting in the work necessary to get back onto an NFL field.
“At the end of the day, you have to look in the mirror and I know what I’m capable of. I know my talent. Be myself. Work hard and come compete every day. I love this game of football and I have a lot in the tank,” Coleman said.
“I’m in my prime. I’m just scratching the surface. … It’s gonna happen. I’ll be good.”
