If you find yourself looking at the latest European model run as a snowstorm approaches, you, too, might be a weather geek.

Many weather enthusiasts to get training and serve as volunteer weather spotters. Here in Minnesota, there are multiple training opportunities in the coming weeks. One way to help provide valuable ground truth during severe weather events in summer is to become a SKYWARN severe weather spotter.

Multiple sessions are held across the Upper Midwest in the coming weeks. Each session provides severe storm basics, training on spotting storm structure, and severe weather reporting criteria on storm elements like hail, flooding rainfall, and damaging winds.

Here’s a list of training events ahead.

Another valuable way to record critical weather information is to become a CoCoRaHS volunteer. CoCoRaHS is short for Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network.

CoCoRaHS (pronounced KO-ko-rozz) is a grassroots volunteer network of backyard weather observers of all ages and backgrounds working together to measure and map precipitation (rain, hail and snow) in their local communities. By using low-cost measurement tools, stressing training and education, and utilizing an interactive Web-site, our aim is to provide the highest quality data for natural resource, education and research applications. The only requirements to join are an enthusiasm for watching and reporting weather conditions and a desire to learn more about how weather can affect and impact our lives.

So if you have some extra time and want to help monitor and record MInnesota’s amazing weather mosaic, these opportunities might be just the thing you are looking for.
