Meghan and Harry Are Looking for a Fresh Start in California - Vanity Fair

Before Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their plans to leave the royal family, there were rumors that the pair wanted to buy a house in California, even if they would only live there part time. Once they made their bombshell announcement and got started down the road to financial independence, a move to the West Coast became practically inevitable, even if they did set up initially on Vancouver Island. A recent report in People confirmed their California dreams. “They will be spending time in California and in Canada. He’s not looking back,” a friend said. “Harry is looking straight ahead at his future with his family.”

A royal insider said that moving for them is less about where they end up and more about their state of mind. “This is what Meghan and Harry have always wanted—to create their own life,” the source told the magazine. “It’s got to feel like an immense relief to get out of the U.K. and go down their own path.”

According to the magazine, Harry started telling people that he was considering a fresh start as early as last year, and his relationship with Meghan is still strong. “Deep down they are truly in love with each other, and what you see is truly who they are,” a source said.

So while this supports some of the comments by other royal insiders—specifically that anxiety and emotional turmoil pushed them to make a clean break with the family—a palace insider told the magazine that Harry's family is trying to help them jump start their new lives. “The family has really tried to make this as collaborative and kind and as loving as possible as they start this new trajectory,” a source said.

Friends also confirmed that Harry and his brother Prince William did talk privately while he was in the U.K., despite a cold-seeming greeting at the Commonwealth Day service last week. “I know that the brothers have had the opportunity to talk behind closed doors. It was helpful and useful,” a friend said. “As time goes on, things will become a little less, not raw, but... time is a good thing for people to go away and think.”

But another source was less convinced and thinks things might be too broken to be fixed. “[Their relationship is] forever changed,” the source said. “They won’t get back to the way they were.”
