Thompson looking at scenarios for next school year - Loveland Reporter-Herald

The Thompson School District is looking at four possible scenarios for next school year in light of the coronavirus pandemic — returning to in-person instruction at school per the approved calendar, distance learning, a hybrid of the two or a delayed start to the school year.

Officials with learning services and operations will detail for the Board of Education on Wednesday how, through collaboration and subcommittees, they will begin making plans for each of those possibilities.

The school board will meet at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday in executive session to discuss teacher contract negotiations, and then will meet in open session at 6 p.m. The meetings will be virtual, and the district has a new method for the public to comment in the online meeting format.

Looking to next year

District officials are moving from response mode, figuring out how to complete this school year with buildings closed due to the pandemic, into recovery mode, looking to next year.

The overall plans will look at everything from how and what students will learn to the ins and outs of providing meals and transportation to what will be needed for maintenance and facilities, as well as extracurricular activities, according to information in an online packets for the Wednesday meeting. Officials are researching ideas as well as gathering input from teachers, specialists and building leaders to employees across departments.

Officials plan to return to the school board between the end of June and August with details of how those different scenarios would work and for board approval of their plans.

Tuning in to the meeting

The 6 p.m. school board meeting will be streamed on the school district’s YouTube page.

Viewers will not be able to call in during the meeting with comments. However, a new board policy allows residents to call in before the meeting and record a public comment that could be played to the board during the virtual session.

Community members can call 970-613-6776 between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday, the day of the meeting, to record a comment. They must give their full name, address and the topic of their message before beginning their comment, which will be capped at 3 minutes.

The board secretary will listen to the messages before the meeting to make sure callers comply with policy and standards, including that all remarks are suitable for those kindergarten-aged and older and that the messages do not contain “profanity, yelling, fighting words, defamatory or abusive remarks or derogatory language,” according to information provided by the district.

The messages that meet those standards will be played during the public comment portion of the  virtual meeting.

A link to the YouTube channel will be posted at thompsonschools.org.

Looking at other items

The school board agenda also includes:

  • A vote on whether to spend $750,000 on synthetic turf for Max Marr field at Berthoud High School. The district already has $200,000 in bond maintenance money set aside to repair the irrigation system for the field. The proposal is to take that money, along with $550,000 from the bond contingency fund, and instead install synthetic turf that will not require irrigation and will, in the long run, save money on maintenance. This vote is part of the consent agenda, meaning unless a board member requests separate discussion, it will be approved with a list of other items on a single vote.
  • Discussion about refunding to families half of the special course fees that they paid for the spring semester in light of the fact that nearly half of the semester was conducted through distance learning because school buildings were closed at spring break and did not reopen. Classes for the rest of the semester were moved online or through paper packets. The course fees are assessed to help cover the cost of consumable materials used during those classes. High school principals suggested the refund.
