ST. PETERSBURG — The Florida Highway Patrol continues to search the motorcyclist who drove off after hitting a 6-year-old girl walking on Gandy Boulevard N last week.
The crash took place at about 10:30 p.m. on May 13 as the child tried to cross the road alone outside the Peridot Palms Apartments at 10601 Gandy Blvd. N.
The child was walking south across westbound Gandy, troopers said. Then she was struck by the right side of a westbound motorcycle, knocking a piece of it off. The motorcyclist kept going and troopers have been searching ever since.
The girl was seriously injured. The Highway Patrol on Monday released photos depicting a motorcycle and parts similar to the one that struck her.
The motorcycle in the photo is a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, but troopers say it is only similar to the one they’re seeking, not the actual motorcycle. The suspect’s motorcycle left behind a piece of debris. They released a photo of the debris, and a composite photo showing the debris next to similar motorcycle parts.
The state Department of Children and Families is investigating why the girl was alone and crossing a busy highway late at night, troopers said.
Anyone with information about the motorcyclist and vehicle being sought in this case is asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol at (813) 558-1800. To be eligible for a cash reward and remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at (800) 873-8477, go online at www.crimestopperstb.com or use the P3 Tips Mobile smartphone application.
