The Atlanta Braves blasted six home runs en route to defeating the New York Mets on Friday night in Fried’s return from the IL. The offense continues to roll and the rotation is getting ready for the postseason run.
The Atlanta Braves have excelled despite a lack of reliable starting pitching options all season. The offense has been video game-like with the difficulty set on “rookie”.
The bullpen has lived up to the hype as one of the best in the league and Max Fried has cemented his status as one of the best pitchers in the game.
Fried Looks Sharp in Return
Max Fried returned from the IL after averaging just 90.9 mph on his fastball in his last outing. While the fastball wasn’t up to speed with where it was in the beginning of the season, it showed improvement on the radar gun. Nonetheless, Fried was an effective pitcher, routinely hitting 92-93 mph and not allowing a run until the fifth inning.
Fried has a stellar 1.96 ERA through 10 starts this season and leads an evolving and rapidly improving rotation into the final stretch of the 2020 season.
Atlanta Braves Offense Continues to Roll
The Atlanta Braves had double-digit runs scored in 11.7% of their games in 2019.
This season, they have scored double-digit runs in 19.6% of their games.
The Braves and the Dodgers are the only two teams to break the 300 run plateau for the season. The Dodgers sit atop the leaderboard at 303 runs scored and the Braves are just two behind them at 301. The difference is the Braves have played one less game.
This team has a truly elite offense that saw Ozzie Albies hitting from the nine-hole go yard twice on Friday night against the Mets.
The Braves have the best team slugging percentage in all of baseball with a .490 SLG. The next closest is the Padres at .480.
They also lead all of baseball in team OPS with .837. The next closest is .818.
The team is second in the MLB in homers and first in doubles.
Freddie Freeman continued his tear toward the MVP by going 3-5 with 2 RBI, a walk, and two doubles (giving him 20 on the year).
Freddie now leads the NL in average (.359), RBI (48), doubles (20), and is tied for first in games played.
Freddie leads the Braves in OBP (.471), SLG (.658), OPS (1.128), H (66), 2B (20), BB (37), and has played in all 51 games.
It is safe to argue that Atlanta has the best offense in the league. Freddie Freeman has been the best hitter on the best offense in baseball.
MVP! MVP! MVP!
Preparing for Postseason
To add to the offensive firepower and the phenomenal bullpen, the rotation is coming together just in time.
Ian Anderson has looked like a stud so far with a 1.64 ERA and a 3-0 record in his first four major-league starts. He has amassed 27 strikeouts in 22.0 innings pitched.
Kyle Wright‘s last outing showed sustained confidence in his high-octane two-seam fastball that he needs to get through the line up two or three times. His next start will be watched carefully.
Cole Hamels has rushed his rehab to get back for the postseason. He made his first start of the season on Wednesday. For a guy that hasn’t seen game action in about a year, and with no spring training, he looked pretty good. He did give up three earned runs in 3.1 IP but the end game with Hamels is being ready and effective in the postseason.
Max Fried will lead the charge and for the first time all year, we can finally start to imagine some semblance of reliable competitiveness behind him and this elite offense.
Ian Anderson takes the mound against the Mets today.
