ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- The 14th annual National Friends of Libraries Week is coming up. All throughout October at the Rocky River Public Library, there will be a dizzying array of special incentives for renewing a Friends membership or signing up as a new Friend as part of their fundraising drive.
“Joining the Friends is a special way to make new friends, to give back to the community and to make the library even better. Friends automatically receive 10 percent off all fines at the checkout, as well as a one-year subscription to the Friends' newsletter,” according to the library’s information.
This year’s Friends fundraising will go toward purchasing a piece of equipment used for education about meal preparation and nutrition -- a Charlie Cart.
The Charlie Cart Project is a California-based non-profit, which describes the mobile kitchen as a “classroom to deliver hands-on nutrition education in any learning environment.”
The cart, which houses approximately 170 pieces of kitchen equipment -- from eating utensils to kitchen gadgets to pots and pans -- costs about $9,500 and includes 54 lesson plans.
The special Friends incentives at RRPL throughout October include:
· Kids Membership (16 or younger): $5. Receive one Mitchell’s Ice Cream free scoop certificate, library bookmark and pencil and one Bigmouth Donut coupon for a free donut.

· From 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 21, 20 percent of your purchase at Danny Boy’s will go to support Friends of the RRPL. Note: You must pick up a flyer in advance and present it upon purchase.
Here’s how to sign up for a Friends membership:
· Visit the library’s online store: https://friends-rocky-river-public-library-inc.square.site (note a $1 extra service charge per transaction to cover fees). Visa, MC, American Express, Discover, Apple Pay and Google Pay accepted.
· Visit the library at 1600 Hampton Road, go to the greeter’s desk and ask for an application. Cash and checks made payable to Friends of the Rocky River Public Library are accepted.
· Visit the library’s page on the RRPL main website and print and complete the membership form, then return it to the library with check or cash: https://rrpl.org/wpcontent/uploads/2018/07/friends_form_2014.pdf
The Friends, founded in 1971, provides financial support and volunteer services to the library. Through membership dues and fundraising activities, the Friends provide financial support for programs and services, furniture and equipment that the library could not otherwise afford. The Friends enhance the library’s ability to serve children, teens, families, seniors and the whole community.
