In their past four meetings, the Los Angeles Football Club has felt extremely comfortable against San Jose and coach Matias Almeyda’s man-marking system.
Last year, LAFC (5-5-3, 18 points) outscored the Earthquakes 9-0 in two contests. Earlier this month, LAFC defeated San Jose 5-1.
“The key is playing our football,” LAFC midfielder Mark-Anthony Kaye said. “Whenever we can play our game really well, it makes it difficult for teams. We’ve had some success against them in the past, but every game is different and we just have to go into it with the right mentality and have a good start and keep it going throughout the game.
In the past five games against San Jose, dating to 2018, LAFC enjoys a commanding 20-4 goal advantage.
The teams will meet again Sunday night at Banc of California Stadium (7:30 p.m., YouTube TV, Ch. 62).
San Jose (2-6-5) hasn’t been in good form since Major League Soccer returned in August, posting a 0-5-3 record to fall into last place in the Western Conference on 11 points. In its past two games, San Jose has been outscored 11-1 by Portland and Colorado.
“It is always an interesting match,” Kaye said of playing San Jose. “It requires a lot of concentration on our end …they can make it difficult for their opponents, but we understand what it takes to have success against them and we hope can do that early on (in the game).”
LAFC bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Seattle on Sept. 18 with a 6-0 win over Vancouver on Wednesday. LAFC scored an MLS record four goals in the first 14 minutes, on its way to tying a club record for most goals in a game.
“It was important for us to have a shutout,” LAFC coach Bob Bradley said. “Something that we haven’t had for a while and so hopefully it’s a game that we can build on.
“We just have still not been as sharp as we can be. We’ve had stretches in every game where we feel good, but other moments where we’ve hurt ourselves. So, we’ve just got to be more consistent and regain confidence and just keep trying to improve in all areas.”
