Holmdel Hornets

League: Shore Conference

Last year: 6-4; lost to Woodrow Wilson in South Jersey, Group 3 semifinal

Key players: Thomas Sardo, Jr., LB; Joe Mancino, Sr., OL; Gary Alaimo, Sr., OL; Christian Donnelly, Sr., QB; Jared Battaglia, Jr., QB; Jaden Gallo, Jr., RB/DB; Nick Iulo, Sr., OL/DL; Joe Hammer, Sr., OL; Karim Tehlikian, Sr., OL; AJ Decicco, Sr., RB; Gavin Raheb, Jr., TE; Dylan Day, Sr., WR; Myles Day, Sr., WR; Tighe Steineke, Sr., S; Mac Rainess, Sr., WR; Thomas Ilvento, Sr., DB/RB

Outlook: The Holmdel defense led the way for the Hornets last season as the team put together a 6-4 record culminating in a one-sided loss against Woodrow Wilson in the second round of the playoffs. The D went on a tare through the latter portion of the season, conceding 54 total points over the first two weeks before allowing an average of just over 8 points per game in seven games prior to the season-ending playoff loss. The team went 5-2 in those games despite the offense scoring over 20 points in just two of the contests. The team will turn to the defense once again this year, and while several pieces are lost to graduation, the team’s leading tackler from last season will return to champion the defense. Thomas Sardo, who led the squad in tackles as a sophomore, is back for his junior season looking to captain the front 7 once again. With running back Thomas Ammarati lost to graduation, Jaden Gallo figures to assume the lion’s share of carries in his junior year. Meanwhile, whoever wins the quarterback job will have plenty of size and experience in front of him, with five seniors on the offensive line including two monsters on the edge. Tackles Joe Mancino and Gary Alaimo are each pushing 6′3″, 300 lbs and possess division-1 level skill.

Who will run QB behind experienced O-line?: Also returning after another year of experience is a pair of athletes who will be competing for the quarterback job. Senior Christian Donnelly and junior Jared Battaglia each gained valuable experience under center last year and will compete for the starting job this season. With five seniors on the O-line including four returning starters, each one has the ability to be effective behind a line that features more continuity than most, a factor that may be more important than ever after a coronavirus-altered preseason. Twin brothers Myles Day and Dylan Day will be looking to make an impact on the edges as starting wide receivers and defensive backs.
