Mayor honored

Mayor Lorraine Conway was honored with a plaque from the Manistee Downtown Development Authority for "outstanding service and leadership” yesterday. The meeting of the DDA was the last for Conway in the position of chairperson, which traditionally goes to the mayor of Manistee. She has served as chairperson since 1995.

60 YEARS AGO

Annual fall leaf cleanup starts today

The new Wayne Street cleaner purchased this past summer by the city at a cost of $9,168 displayed its versatility today. Using a leaf broom attachment that came with the equipment, the machine is now on the north side in its leaf cleanup duties.

Mock vote

Richard Nixon will be the next president of the United States and Paul Bagwell will be Michigan’s next governor if the mock election held yesterday by some 150 Norman-Dickson High School students is a national indication.

80 YEARS AGO

Gov. proclaims Armistice Day

(FROM THE UNITED PRESS) - Governor Dickson today called upon the people of Michigan “to set aside this Armistice Day of 1940 as a solemn occasion for an appeal to the Almighty for peace.” In the annual Armistice Day proclamation, the governor wrote that “In other years we have celebrated the end of a way. This year we shudder at the beginning of a new one.”

“Win one for the Gipper” at the Vogue

Now playing at the Vogue Theatre is “Knute Rockne, All American” starring Pat O’Brien and Ronald Regan. Showtimes for the Warner Bros. football drama will be 1:30, 3:30, 5:30, 7:30 and 9:30.
