KALAMAZOO, MI -- The city of Kalamazoo is seeking nominations for local youth working to promote social justice and equity.
The 2021 Social Justice Youth Awards recognize youth for community service, volunteerism and leadership toward causes that promote justice and equity for everyone, according to a news release from the city of Kalamazoo.
Nominations for youth between the ages of 12 and 19 are accepted from adults such as teachers, advisors, mentors or coaches. Nominations can be submitted through 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, the release said.
“Even amid a pandemic, youth in Kalamazoo are continuing to make a difference and set an example, not just for their peers,” Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson said. “I am so proud of what they are achieving and it’s an honor to present these awards each year and celebrate this work.”
Visit the city of Kalamazoo’s website for more information on how to submit recommendations.
The city presents one award in honor of Lewis Walker, a trailblazer for the progression of racial equity in Kalamazoo.
Additional awards are presented by program sponsors Life EMS, Fifth Third Bank, Schupan & Sons, Consumers Energy, Kalamazoo Non-Violent Opponents of War and Lodge-Dennis. Award recipients also receive a $300 scholarship.
The awards are presented by City Commission each January as part of the city’s celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Community-Wide Day of Service and other group activities have been canceled in January 2021. Instead, community members are encouraged to find ways to help others safely.
