New plant should bring 40 jobs

The closing of Ambar Chemical Company caused the loss of 78 jobs last April, but the recent purchase of the plant by General Chemical Group, Inc. is expected to soften the blow as production is scheduled to start some time during the first quarter of 2001. General Chemical, which has yet to disclose the purchase price of the Ambar facility, will receive a tax abatement that reduces its property tax obligations to approximately $300,000 a year. Ambar received the same deal.

Snow hampers area driving

Although weather conditions from the first snowstorm of the early winter season improved in the city of Manistee today, areas in the county still were drifted in by wind-driven snow and state police reported numerous slippery sections on most roads. Arcadia and Onekama schools closed today due to drifted roads which prevented school buses from making their routes.

Dinner dance reminder

Members of the Eagles Lodge who have not purchased their tickets for the dinner dance being held this coming Saturday evening in the lodge clubrooms for the benefit of the children’s Christmas party, are asked to do so as soon as possible so that final arrangements can be completed by the committee.

Bowling winners

Six winners in the first half of the Brunswick Bowling carnival being conducted at the Manistee Recreation Alleys were announced today. William Johnson has been named winner of a bowling ball and bowling ticket; trophies go to Miss Lucille Gorley, John Eckoff and Hugo Erdman.

Sale of land

A sale of lands in Manistee County, which reverted to the conservation department after failure of owners to pay taxes, will be held at the courthouse on Dec. 11 at 10 a.m. County Treasurer Leon Kubacki announced today. Properties that will be offered for sale reverted to the state in November, 1939, for the nonpayment of taxes and have been applied for by the former owners of record within the 30-day period as provided by law.
