Albany planned to start the new year off in grand style thanks to the inauguration festivities to celebrate incoming New York State Governor Nathan L. Miller. The inaugural parade was to form at the Washington Armory, then travel from Lark Street to State Street, to Eagle Street, to Hudson Avenue, to Philip Street, to Myrtle Avenue, back to Eagle, where Miller and outgoing Governor Al Smith, along with their staffs, would be waiting. They would all join the parade in carriages and continue on to the Capitol.
At the Capitol, some of the various troops making up the parade would form two lines and present arms to the two governors, before being reviewed by Grand Marshal Col. Charles E. Walsh. More than 15 companies, as well as a 60-piece and a 30-piece band, would be among the marchers. The battery, which was stationed in Capital Park, was to fire the governor’s salute of 19 guns as Gov. Miller was taking the oath of office in the assembly chambers. A 75mm gun that was used in France during World War I was one of those included.

She just wants a "just price"
Mary Campese, a 65-year-old Troy widow, ended the year seeking “a just price” for her property and refusing to sign papers releasing it to the State Department of Transportation at the “market price” offered. Her house and a property she owned and rented, as well as a nearby garage, had been claimed under public domain by the department to be demolished to make room for the Troy North-South Arterial. The State DOT had offered her $4,000 for her two-floor house, another $4,000 for the property she rented out and $800 for the garage. Mrs. Campese said the offer was too low, saying she could perhaps buy a car for $4,000 but not a house and, at her age and her financial situation, no bank would give her a mortgage. She did not want to buy a fixer-upper either. A private appraiser had estimated her house at $5,500, the second house at $4,500 and the garage at $1,000. It was difficult to tell if 1971 would be prosperous for Mrs. Campese.
