Tigers still looking for another pitcher, GM Al Avila says - MLive.com

LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers might not be done shopping just yet.

General manager Al Avila said the Tigers were still looking for pitching, probably a starter, on a Major League or minor-league deal.

The Tigers’ first pitcher-catcher workout of spring training is Wednesday.

“We’re definitely looking for more pitching as we speak,” Avila said. “I think at least one more starter would be ideal.”

The Tigers signed free-agent starter Jose Urena in December, but since then have focused on bolstered their lineup more than their pitching.

Among the higher profile free agents still on the market are Taijuan Walker and ex-Tiger Rick Porcello.

Avila said the Tigers have discussed using a six-man rotation in 2021 as one strategy to handle the transition from a 60-game to 162-game season.

Matthew Boyd, Spencer Turnbull and Michael Fulmer seem to have secure spots in the rotation. Urena also seems likely to get first crack at a starting job, although Avila noted that he might also be useful out of the bullpen.

“He wants to be a starter and we’re hoping he can give us some starting innings, but he has experience in the bullpen and can even close games,” Avila said.

Beyond that, left-handers Daniel Norris and Tyler Alexander will get a chance to compete for a starting role, even if they ultimately end up in the bullpen.

Prospects Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and Matt Manning will also be factors.

What will manager A.J. Hinch do with so much pitching, especially if the Tigers add one more arm to the mix in the coming days? Stay tuned.

“You might see more players being brought up and optioned as you need fresh arms from week to week,” Avila said. “It will be interesting to see how A.J. and (new pitching coach) Chris Fetter manage not only the bullpen, but the entire staff.”

Another spring mystery that Avila didn’t quite resolve in his Tuesday afternoon chat with reporters: What will the Tigers’ infield look like?

The Tigers signed ex-Baltimore Orioles slugger Renato Nunez to a minor-league deal. He has a chance to make the team and get regular at-bats at first base, but there are no guarantees.

If Nunez starts the season in Toledo, the Tigers could put Isaac Paredes at third base and Jeimer Candelario at first.

And don’t forget, Miguel Cabrera wants to play more first base, too.

“(Nunez) will have an opportunity,” Avila said. “We’re looking for offensive punch. He came to the right place.”
