Summer in Detroit: What We're Looking Forward to This Season After Last Year - WDET

Carrie Pitzer/Detroit Stock City

Summer is officially here, a time for discovering new spots, revisiting old favorites and exploring this great city and state of ours.

After last summer, many of us are eager to emerge from our pandemic cocoons and eat food that we didn’t make ourselves after watching it on TikTok, have a cocktail at a table that’s not our desk while on Zoom and listen to live music outdoors instead of watching it on a screen. The state is lifting all COVID-19 restrictions this week. But maybe you’re a bit rusty about what to do. Maybe you’re even feeling a bit of anxiety about seeing people IRL after a year of just talking to your family, significant others and pets. We’re here to help. All summer we’ll be sharing how to live your best summer with ideas from community members like you.

But most importantly please stay safe and adhere to regulations determined by venues and businesses; while case rates continue to decline, there is still a pandemic.

Here’s what a few of us at WDET staffers are looking forward to this summer. What’s on your list? Where are your favorite spots to get ice cream? What should LaToya Cross capture with her new camera? Where should I go eat barbecue? Let us know and follow along on wdet.org and Instagram all summer long for tips from locals about how to (safely) maximize your Michigan summer.

Visiting more breweries, traveling, attending sporting events (Tigers, DCFC), generally getting outside more.

Lisa Brancato, Senior Sales Strategist & Event Manager

Live music outdoors, going to get ice cream (I’m in search of the best place, but I do like Wally’s Custard in St. Clair Shores), outdoor movies (Balduck Park on the east side), square dancing (well that doesn’t always happen outside but it’s one of my favorite activities that I’ve missed during COVID), and networking and dating — woo-hoo!

This summer, I’m looking forward to checking out the augmented reality mural festival, traveling to see friends in Memphis and Chicago and roaming the city taking photos with my new camera!

I would love to hit a few museums, Greenfield Village for sure.

Laura Herberg, Reporter

Dining out! Karaoke! Movie theaters! Bowling! Also looking forward to continuing outdoor fun like hikes, canoeing, camping and picnics.

Dorothy Hernandez, Digital Editor

I am eager to check out all the new restaurants that have opened in the past year as well as discover new-to-me spots (it has been a longtime goal of mine to hit up all of the BBQ joints in town). On my list: Coriander Kitchen and Farm and La Palapa del Parian (I love their food truck so I’m excited for the brick and mortar!). I’m also excited about resuming my annual trip to northern Michigan to discover new Michigan beers and wines and going on more bike rides.

Amanda LeClaire, CultureShift Host

Doing a backpacking trip through some of the U.P. hopefully in August. On the list: Taquahemon Falls.

Meta Stange, Digital Content + Engagement Manager

I invested in a kayak and have been thoroughly enjoying exploring amazing parks within an hour of Detroit.
