Rays’ Rich Hill looking forward to the hit-and-run vs. Nationals - Tampa Bay Times

Rich Hill is looking forward to starting Tuesday’s game, as he has 15 others this year and 179 over his 17-season career.

But the 41-year-old lefty is more excited about the chance to hit, since the Rays are playing the Nationals in Washington, D.C., under National League rules.

“It’s fun,” Hill said. “You get to play the whole game. When you get a hit, you get on base, you get to run the bases. I mean, you feel like a kid.”

Hill has done okay, for a pitcher, with a .112 career average (26-for-133) with 13 RBI and five doubles along the way. He was 3-for-18 in 2019 with the Dodgers. He struck out in his only at-bat this year.

His strategy? “Just put together a competitive at bat,” Hill said. “In all seriousness, the key is really a.) trying to get the bunt down, but b.) also have the pitcher work the count or throw a few more pitches.”

Hill is serious about his hitting and has his own bat and batting practice routine. If does get on base, he hopes manager Kevin Cash acknowledges his speed with a green light to run. “He hasn’t really utilized some of the speed that I possess,” Hill joked. “He knows my legs are fresh.”

Reliever Louis Head was optioned to Triple-A Durham, with infielder Mike Brosseau expected to be recalled Tuesday, giving the Rays a fourth bench player for the two NL-rules games. With shortstop Taylor Walls slated to come off the injured list Saturday, Brosseau likely will have a short stay.

The Rays and Nationals split a two-game set at Tropicana Field three weeks ago. The Rays are 17-18 overall against the Expos/Nationals, 4-8 in Washington. The Rays are 8-2 in interleague play this season.
