Dear Editor:
On the afternoon of Aug. 27th my son drove down to his father's house on the west side of Southport (about half way down the road to Newagen) to check on his father's dog while he was out lobstering for the day. When he got there an unknown vehicle was parked in his father's driveway, so he drove past to turn around, pulled his pick up truck completely off the road (all four tires off the pavement), and walked up to the house to let the dog out.
In the time it took him take care of the dog (15 minutes), someone ran into his truck and took off without reporting the accident. The collision was so hard, it rendering the tailgate inoperable, and dented and scratched the entire rear, driver's side panel. A neighbor heard the collision, but the vehicle sped off so quickly he didn't get a look at it.
The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department has been notified and my family is offering a cash reward for any information that leads to the apprehension of this hit and run driver. From the color of the scratches left on my son's silver Chevy, we are looking for a black vehicle with damage on the passenger side.
I also would like to point out that both my son's occupations (sailmaker and lobsterman) require the working use of his truck and that his vehicle is vital to both his trades. This reckless incident has negatively impacted the way he makes a living, and I ask that anyone who has information about this incident to please call both the Sheriff's Department (207-882-7332) and me (633-7161).
There is no room in our community for this type of behavior and our family is hopeful that there is another witness who will do the right thing and report what they saw.
