Wake Research looking for unvaccinated participants for J&J booster trials - WRAL.com

— Researchers in Raleigh are looking into a possible Johnson & Johnson booster shot and have started clinical trials to observe how a second dose affects people.

Joe Lyons, who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in Wake County, said he isn't concerned that his vaccine isn't as effective as the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines.

"It’s still effective against hospitalizations and death and to me that’s the number one thing," he said.

Dr. Matthew Hong, a researcher in Wake County, said that more clinical trials need to be done before a booster is available for those who were received a Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

He's looking for people in the area to participate in a clinical trial observing the Johnson & Johnson vaccine as a 2-shot series. Currently, it's only approved as a one dose shot.

"It’s going to be looking at a different dosing form, but also a different strength and it’s going to be looking at which ones are the best," Hong said.

To participate in the Wake Research study you must be unvaccinated. Participants could receive compensation up to $1,050 for time and travel.

Hong said that the need for a booster shot from Johnson & Johnson might not be needed as much as it is for the Moderna and Pfizer shots.

Initial information is showing that because of the type of vaccine it is, it may be longer lasting. The Johnson & Johnson shot is an adnovirus vaccine, while the other two are mRNA vaccines.

"It’s a different mechanism that seems in some of the research papers to give you a longer length of immune response, and some more cellular immunity than the RNA vaccines," Hong said.

A third shot of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, which is similar to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, produces a strong immune response, research shows.
