It took a song to remind me.

Quite some time ago, I heard a voice tell me repeatedly that, by looking up, we are one. As a naive young man, I couldn’t comprehend what I was being told. How can looking up show us as one? Didn’t make sense until later in life when I was introduced to differing philosophies of life and how they all connected us.

Looking up was one form of that connection and I was reminded of it at a recent concert in our neighboring park.

The musical duet was a local couple who sang and played guitars — they were darn good! For a song to mean anything to me, it must have a beat, good lyrics, a nice melody and good instrumentals. This couple was four for four! Their beat was from a floor board bass instrument, they write their own lyrics, the melodies are soft and they can certainly play guitars. I was simply enjoying them until…

The musicians introduced a song entitled “Looking Up” … hmmm, seems I’d heard that phrase before somewhere along my pathway. The song was about a time when they returned home from a gig and as they neared home, they watched the moon interacting with the brilliant stars — especially, Venus! The heavenly sight reminded the couple to look up and see — as others are looking up and seeing at the same time and, in that simple act of looking up, we are bound together.

The voice from my past, the academic studies I had done and the song’s lyrics all came together and I began to … look up.

I was sitting under some beautiful old trees and began to film a video as I brought my phone camera up from the bandshell and videoed the trees outlined against the night sky with the moon and the stars shining through the tree’s branches. It was breathtaking how such a simple gesture can mean so much and bring together so many elements of one’s life. It took a song…

After the concert, I had to have my pondering nightly glass of wine.

I wanted a wine that was soft, pleasant and settling. I poured a bit of Castle Rock Chardonnay from the Central Coast of California — an area that is becoming more and more compelling to me for its diversity and richness of wines.

Castle Rock fit perfectly. I remember an old friend who drinks nothing but Chardonnay and wished I could see her, talk with her and share this wine. I looked up, raised my glass to her and sipped the wine’s subtle vanilla and pear tastes.

Then I began to think of all the times I could have/should have looked up while sampling other beverages from around the world.

The time when I was enjoying a glass of Starborough’s Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. I wondered how many people were sampling the same wine, at the same time across the globe from me. The only way I could interact with them was by drinking the wine, obviously, but also by looking up and seeing what they see. That united us.

Then, there’s the time I was enjoying a bit of Glenlivet 12-year-old Single Malt Scotch. Did I even think abut the people in Scotland who were doing exactly the same thing I was doing? Nope, but I will from now on — there are those who believe Scotch is the unifying whisky. I hope so!

And, how about the time I was enjoying a glass of Goose Island Beer Company’s “Sofie”? Such a wonderful experience as I sat in the brewery and loved the Belgium ale’s orange taste — of course, sitting there with my son wasn’t a bad thing, either! Now, I drink the ale and look up to wonder if he’s seeing/tasting the same thing I am.

There are too many times of sipping, types of beverages that were sipped to recount here — that would probably fill an encyclopedia!

So, let’s do this. Let’s not forget that we are all one, and as we enjoy a bit of life, someone, somewhere is doing the exact same thing. What you see … I see … we are one. And looking up is a simple way to remind of us of that sameness.

I hope that maternal voice from the past is finally proud of me.
