Broncos gassers, notable Week 5 quotes following loss at Steelers and looking ahead to Week 6 versus Raiders - The Denver Post

Gassers, quotable and a look ahead following the Broncos’ Week 5 27-19 loss to the Steelers.

Gassers

Kyle Fuller

After playing poorly against Baltimore, Fuller turned in a nightmarish performance as Ben Roethlisberger consistently picked on him. The corner gave up 73 yards worth of catches on the Steelers’ opening drive, including a 50-yard TD, and was also flagged for pass interference on a 3rd-and-15 incompletion. That led to the Steelers’ second touchdown two plays later. Fuller also had multiple missed tackles.

Dre’Mont Jones

Jones committed the most critical of Denver’s seven penalties for 67 yards. The Steelers’ third-quarter drive appeared to stall out at the Denver 33, and Pittsburgh settled for a Chris Boswell field goal. But on the play, Jones used Pittsburgh linemen to jump over the line, and was called for a rare “leverage” penalty. That personal foul awarded the Steelers 15 yards and a first down; they scored a TD three plays later.

Alexander Johnson

The inside linebacker dropped two potential interceptions, and both came in the red zone on series that eventually resulted in Pittsburgh TDs. In the second quarter, Johnson stepped in front of a Roethlisberger pass intended for running back Najee Harris, but the ball hit him in the hands and dropped to the grass. Johnson dropped another potential interception in the third quarter, on a pass that hit him in the chest.

Quotebook

Vic Fangio on game-ending INT by Teddy Bridgewater: “They had tight coverage everywhere, and it was fourth down and he had to take a shot. It didn’t work out.”

Fangio on the Broncos’ defensive performance: “You go on the road and give up 27 points, you’re not going to win many games.”

Bridgewater on failed comeback: “We’ve got to be better, start faster. We’ve been preaching that for the past couple weeks getting out to a fast start, and it finally caught up to us today… We can’t wait to have a sense of urgency until we’re down.”

Fuller on his performance: “Very disappointing.”

Bridgewater on looking ahead: “The fight we saw in the fourth quarter was impressive. There’s a lot of positives to take away from this one, and we just can’t let the feeling of losing linger.”

Up Next

Sunday vs Raiders, 2:25 p.m.

Record: 3-2

Week 4 result: Lost 20-9 versus Chicago

Coach: Jon Gruden (4th year; 8th overall as Raiders’ head coach).

About the Raiders: While Gruden remains embroiled in a controversy over vulgar emails that surfaced from 2011, the Raiders offense laid a goose egg on Sunday at home. A field goal by Colorado native Daniel Carlson was Las Vegas’ lone points until the fourth quarter, and the Raiders’ rushing game was held to just 63 yards. Las Vegas is vulnerable as the Broncos need a bounce-back win at home.
