Ferris coach looking forward to Saturday's game - The Pioneer

BIG RAPIDS – The stage is set for No. 2 ranked Ferris to play at No. 7-ranked Grand Valley on Saturday night.

Both teams are undefeated and will be bidding for control of the GLIAC football race and a lofty status in the NCAA Division II national rankings.

“Five and o, that’s the best you can be,” Ferris coach Tony Annese said. “I told the guys the other day the biggest issue is getting to five and 0 and getting into the big game. It’s not because it’s a rivalry game but it’s two teams that are undefeated, nationally-ranked and those type of things.

“I told them it was the coach’s job to get them to this point, now it’s kind of a players’ game, to take advantage of an opportunity to play in front of a great environment. It will be unbelievable as it always is whether it be here or there.”

Annese acknowledged injuries have tested his team’s depth.

“We’ve had more in-game injuries than in a long time,” Annese said. “We ended up losing guys who have poured their hearts and soul into preparing for this year.”

Annese likes the buildup going into the game.

“Credit Grand Valley and Ferris for both being undefeated,” he said. “It’s greater for this side of the state.”

Ferris has won 33 straight regular season games and continues to play well away from home.

“We just grind it out and it’s a credit to our guys and the coaching staff and the willingness to trust us and push on the road,” Annese said. “It’s been incredible. It’s been every week just having the mentality to go out there and lay it all on the line. I’m proud of our guys.”

Annese said he isn’t necessarily expecting a high scoring game.

“Both these teams are too good on all three phase to make one area dominant,” he said.

Annese said he took the Ferris job in 2012 but was skeptical how Ferris could do against Grand Valley. He’s 8-2 against the Lakers.

“We’ve been able to compete with them and I’m proud of our guys for that,” Annese said. “Both teams have been ranked in the nation.”
