Looking About: Hope - Ukiah Daily Journal

“Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul –and sings the tunes without the words –and never stops at all.”

— Emily Dickinson

Hope…I always thought my Grandfather authored this quote, “When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hold on.” Now I have learned that Franklin D. Roosevelt is generally credited with that bit of wisdom.

“Hope” is a word bandied about these days perhaps more so than in recent memory; the need for it, the help of it.

One day recently at first light I opened the front door to just “feel” nature. A chorus of singing birds greeted, cooing doves and other singing birds…some finches, sparrows, and others. All seemed to be rejoicing that it was the dawning of a new day. It was pure joy to just stand at the door and listen to God’s tiny musicians making music.

The reminder is that there is always hope.

Driving around Ukiah to view all the wonderful spring flowers can lift the spirit. One favorite, the Iris.

The flowers of Iris symbolize wisdom, courage, hope and faith. The purple iris represents admiration whereas a bouquet of iris symbolizes hope and faith. White iris makes for bridal bouquet and yellow is the color of passion.

However, the flowers are universal messenger of friendship, everlasting promises, and love.

Hope, faith, and love…exactly what we need in abundance.

“I do the very best I know how –the very best I can; and I mean to keep on doing so until the end.”

— Abraham Lincoln

Do something…President Franklin D. Roosevelt said, “One thing is sure. We have to do something. We have to do the best we know how at the moment…If it doesn’t turn out right, we can modify it as we go along.”

The question is, “what” do we do? How about introduce a senior to technology. By necessity, those “of a certain age” are having to play catch up. If you have any extra iPads, SmartPhones, or computers around, offer to loan or gift it to a senior. If they have their own gadgets, teach them how to use Skype, Facebook video chatting, WhatsApp or FaceTime. They will be able to stay in touch with loved ones and abate some potential loneliness without risking getting themselves sick. Our family has been having zoom gatherings on Sundays. It’s been a wonderful tool, almost like Sunday dinners or Thanksgiving when families gather.

Help Them Find Telemedicine: Many older adults have standing doctor’s appointments, even when they are feeling well. If you can, help them get equipped and comfortable with telemedicine if their insurers and healthcare providers offer it to avoid them coming into contact with germs at a doctor’s office.

Fun for all…There are some marvelous travel via technology trips kids of all ages can enjoy while quarantined. Stephanie Osmanski had some great ideas.

-Whale watching…There’s a beluga whale webcam set up at the Georgia Aquarium, so you can see what your whale friends are up to at any time.  https://ift.tt/3aIqe37 It is so cool to watch these magnificent creatures.

-Make a cardboard fort… put those empty Amazon boxes out in the garage to good use!

-E-visit the Louvre – Transport you and your family to Paris, France by taking a digital tour of one of the most famous international museums, the Louvre. https://ift.tt/3cWBydo

-Watch the Cincinnati Zoo livestream – “Until May 31: While the Cincinnati Zoo is closed and kids are home from school, let us help make your children’s hiatus from school fun and educational. Join us for a Home Safari Facebook Live each day at 3 p.m. EDT where we will highlight one of our amazing animals and include an activity you can do from home.” To watch live videos, go to https://ift.tt/2yeagQ1

-Have an indoor picnic – Grab a sheet, whatever food you have, and enjoy a living room picnic (without the ants). You can even play a memory game at the same time: “I’m going to a picnic and I’m bringing…” Each person takes turns remembering (in order) what everyone is bringing and then adds one thing each turn.

-Listen to an astronaut read from space – Storytime From Space is unlike any other kind of story time; NASA astronauts read stories to kids while they float around in space. https://ift.tt/3cLPHcM watched: “Astronaut Annie,” written by Suzanne Slade and read by Astronaut Anne McClain. Well worth the eight minutes:  https://ift.tt/2Kt4kWj
