Autumn is a great time for photographers. At no other season are the colors so bright and beautiful.

Of course it all depends on the weather, but the sky above is often a bright sunny blue with just a few cumulus clouds to add to the overall richness of nature’s tapestry. No painter can completely capture this beauty on his canvas, and even we photographers can only try our best.

Today’s photographers have the advantage of digital cameras, but way back when I became a professional photographer my tools to capture the beauty of autumn were a Nikon camera and a roll of Kodachrome. Add in a close0up lens and a bag of filters and I was ready to go out to seek the beauty of nature.

On one venture during my early years at WKBN-TV I loaded up my trusty Nikon and headed to Columbiana County. One would think that working for a Youngstown station I would head to Mill Creek Park, but I was born and raised in this county and knew the best places to find nature’s beauty. After all I have roamed this county for my entire life.

Of course this self-imposed assignment meant that I traipsed up and down the hills of Beaver Creek State Park, but it might surprise you that a few of my best shots were taken at East Palestine’s City Park. The trees behind the pavilions were dressed in their richest fall dresses, and the sun was shining brightly, highlighting each leaf until even its veins became visible in my viewfinder.

The sun was out on that particular trip, but we all know that is not always the case. Some days, even here in Morning Journal Country, skies can be overcast and dreary. When that happens, take advantage of it and shoot some mood pictures for your portfolio. The results might turn out to be artistic and become some of your best work.

Perhaps a disclaimer is in order as my photography occurred long before digital cameras and taking photos with your phone. Even our phones were tied to the wall. How crazy is that? Film photographers had to deal with film speeds, push processing, and developing. We could not use Photoshop to enhance our pictures. We manipulated our photos under the enlarger using tools such as dodgers. It was a lot of work, but I loved it and I still miss the acrid aroma of Dektol.

Photography has been good to me and I am tempted to drag out my old Digital Rebel, dust it off and head to the fields and streams. To be honest however my days of traipsing up and down hills are over, but I can sit comfortably in my blind and let the wildlife come to me.

Maybe you can do the same, and you might not even need more than a point-and-shoot camera, or even your cell phone. But I do predict that once you give photography a try you will want to upgrade your camera. It sure happened to me and by the time digital came in I had a Nikon system to brag about. Unfortunately digital dropped my film Nikon’s value to next to nothing.

But whether you use a point-and-shoot camera, or the latest digital wonder, photography is a great reason to turn off the TV and video games and get outside and inhale the fresh cool air of autumn. You also might find that you have a talent for photography.

As a professional photographer I was able to record many subjects, including some pretty models for TV commercials. But as attractive as these ladies might be, none of them could match the beauty of Mother Nature, and she is at her best in autumn.
