Marshall Street bar update: Chuck’s still looking for a spot, a new ‘Lucy’s’ coming soon - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. — Chuck’s and Lucy’s are two legendary names in the Marshall Street bar scene near the Syracuse University campus.

It’s possible both names, if not exactly the same bars, will return soon.

Chuck’s, aka Hungry Chucks or Hungry Charlie’s, was a fixture in the alleyway that ran off South Crouse Avenue behind Marshall Street from 1970 until it closed in 2017 to make way for a high-rise residential-retail development called The Marshall.

Owner Stephen Theobald has been angling for a Hungry Chuck’s comeback for more than a year. He initially proposed to locate on the ground floor of The Marshall at 727 South Crouse Ave., and even submitted plans to the Syracuse Planning Commission.

That plan, which Theobald liked because it would return Hungry Chuck’s to its long-time home ground, was still in the works earlier this year. Theobald hoped to reopen the bar, with many of its original furnishing, by the start of the 2021 fall semester.

Then, in July, Syracuse University purchased The Marshall from its owners, who included SU basketball coach Jim Boeheim. SU will use it for luxury student housing with retail space below.

The Chuck’s deal fell through.

In an email to syracuse.com, Theobald said he is currently looking at three or so other locations in the area. He said he hopes to have one selected with the next two months.

“We’re not giving up!” he wrote.

The Lucy’s comeback is a little more certain.

The new place will be called Lucy Blu Island Bar Club. It is scheduled to open soon at 161 Marshall St., in the space that was home to the bar DJ’s on the Hill. (That DJ’s, and an affiliate on Erie Boulevard, closed last year after the State Liquor Authority took action for repeated liquor law violations).

Lucy Blu will be operated by R.C. Faigle, who also owns the Orange Crate Brewing Co. bar at 731 S. Crouse Ave. near Marshall Street and has operated other bars in the area over the years.

One of the predecessors of the Orange Crate was a long-time student hangout called Lucy’s Retired Surfer Bar, generally called “Lucy’s.” Faigle had operated that at 721 S. Crouse, a space that also disappeared for The Marshall construction.

Faigle could not reached for comment. Signs on the building where Lucy Blu will be located indicates it is picking up some of the surfer/island theme from the older bar, including the name Lucy’s. It will have entrances both from Marshall Street and from the old alleyway where The Marshall now stands.

Lucy Blu is billed as a bar and and dance / nightclub. An Instagram post for Lucy Blu teases: “Paradise on the Hill.”
