Rugby Travels to Army Looking For Bounce Back Effort - Wheeling University Athletics

Wheeling, W. Va. - The Wheeling University Rugby team (3-1) suffered their first loss of the season last week at the hands of Notre Dame College 18-16. On Saturday, they head back out on the road when they look for a bounce-back effort in West Point, New York when they battle Army at 2 PM. Offense has been a key piece of their success this season, and they look to get back on track in that aspect.

They faced a physical team in Notre Dame College last time out and held the lead for most of the contest. After not converting a try in the first half of the game, they still went to the locker room ahead 9-5 after three conversion kicks. When they came out of the locker room, they would add onto their lead when Freshman Stanley Giani scored Wheeling's first try of the game. Sophomore Ayoub Jalli (Casablanca, Morroco/Yassmine Oasis) would convert the ensuing kick, and Wheeling was sitting in a good spot up 16-5 to start the second half.

However, Notre Dame College came back and scored 13 unanswered points to take an 18-16 lead late in the second half. Wheeling had one more try to score a comeback victory, but the game-winner was called back in the final seconds of the game leading to the loss. It was Wheeling's first loss of the 2021 Fall season, but Head Coach Michael Geibel was proud of the way his guys played against some tough competition.

"I'm proud of the guys for the way they really worked hard and pushed a top division program," said Geibel. "That's the competition we are working back into seeing each week. While it was tough to lose a close one, I think it has given us a sense of what's possible for this team when we put it all together."

Wheeling dropped to 3-1 on the season with the loss, but they still possess one of the most potent offenses in the area. In their four games this season, they are outscoring opponents by a mark of 212-38, and they have never allowed an opponent to score more than 20 points in a game. With the competition continuing to get tougher and tougher as the season goes on, Wheeling will continue to lean on their offense to put points on the board and set them up for success.

The Match-up

Wheeling and Army have been matching up against each other dating back to the 2014 season and the Cardinals are looking for their first win against the Black Knights. Wheeling has averaged 20 points per game against Army but there has been a little bit of a hiatus in the match-up with the last game between the two teams being played back during the 2018 season.

In that game, Wheeling put up a good fight, but in the end, fell to the Black Knights 33-21 at Bishop Schmitt Field. It was the closest match-up ever between the two teams, and the Cardinals held Army to the fewest points against them in a single match. Wheeling is hoping to take that success to the next level this time out and secure their first-ever win against Army on the road.
