The UAB football team returned to the site of its latest conference championship and the experience proved valuable in keeping league title hopes alive this season.
The Blazers jumped out to an early lead and manhandled their way in the second half to a 21-14 victory over Marshall, Saturday, Nov. 13, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium in Huntington, West Virginia.
UAB improves to 7-3 overall, 5-1 in conference play, and faces UTSA next week in a crucial divisional showdown.
Dylan Hopkins was 13-for-18 passing with 250 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter, and Gerrit Prince and Trea Shropshire led the receiving effort, both corralling five receptions each for 100 yards.
DeWayne McBride led the rushing attack with 108 yards and two touchdowns, and Jermaine Brown Jr. finished with seven carries for 16 yards.
Defensively, the Blazers held the Thundering Herd to 269 total yards, a 1-for-12 showing on third-down conversions and collected two sacks and four tackles for loss. UAB was not penalized in the first half but was called for six fouls in the second half, resulting in 65 yards.
Here’s how it all went down:
First Quarter
UAB 14, Marshall 0
The Blazers dominated the opening frame, outgaining Marshall in offense, 162-43, and taking a two-possession lead on its third possession of the game. UAB was not penalized in the period, held possession for 10:47 and was 3-for-4 on third-down conversions.
UAB received the opening kickoff, getting started fast with a 16-yard pass from Hopkins to Prince on the first play from scrimmage. An 11-yard loss on a bad snap resulted in a 2nd-and-11 for the Blazers but Hopkins found Shropshire in stride for a 64-yard pass down to the 3-yard line of Marshall. McBride punched it in on the next play to give UAB an early 7-0 lead.
The Blazers added to their lead following a second straight three-and-out by Marshall, capping an 11-play, 99-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run by McBride. The drive drained 6:13 off the clock and featured multiple long runs from McBride and a 36-yard reception by Shropshire to give the Blazers a fresh set of downs inside Marshall territory.
Key Play: Shropshire’s 64-yard reception on 3rd-and-13, resulting in a UAB score on the next play.
Key Player: McBride. The sophomore running back had nine carries for 47 yards and two touchdowns.
Second Quarter
UAB 14, Marshall 7
The Thundering Herd opened the second quarter facing a 3-and-2 at UAB’s 39-yard line but came up short on back-to-back plays, turning the ball over on downs. Both teams traded three-and-outs on the next two possessions and found little success afterward until Marshall found pay dirt near the end of the half.
UAB was able to drive into Thundering Herd territory on its second drive of the quarter, Johnson-Sanders and Tejhaun Palmer combining for 25 yards on receptions, but a sack of Hopkins on 2-and-12 brought an end to the drive. The ensuing punt from Kyle Greenwell was downed at the 1-yard line by Prince.
Marshall got its second first-down of the game on the next possession but a holding call pushed the Thundering Herd backward, resulting in its fourth punt of the half. The Blazers went three-and-out on the ensuing possession and Marshall responded with an 8-play, 87-yard drive that was capped with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Grant Wells to Jayden Harrison.
Key Play: Harrison’s 36-yard touchdown reception that cut the UAB lead in half.
Key Player: Wells. The Marshall quarterback was 6-for-8 passing on the Thundering Herd’s final drive of the first half, capping it with a 36-yard touchdown pass.
Third Quarter
UAB 21, Marshall 14
The Blazers were as inept of offense as they were in the second frame and allowed Marshall to tie the game midway through the period after leading 14-0 after the first quarter. UAB was held to three yards on its first two drives but found success at the end of the quarter to retake the lead heading into the final 15 minutes of action.
The Thundering Herd opened the second with possession, gaining a first down on a 7-yard run by Wells, but were forced to punt following an incompletion on third down. Marshall was held to a three-and-out on its second drive but was able to tie the game late in the frame with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Wells to Corey Gammage, capping a 10-play, 57-yard drive that was kept alive with a pass interference call on fourth down.
UAB went three-and-out on its first two drives of the quarter but was able to retake the lead on a 6-play, 75-yard drive, capped with a 1-yard touchdown run by Hopkins. Despite going three-and-out twice, UAB outgained Marshall’s offense in the third period, 93-72.
Key Play: Hopkins’s 51-yard pass to Prince, giving UAB a new set of downs inside Marshall territory. The junior quarterback finished off the drive with a 1-yard scoring run
Key Player: Hopkins. After taking a few hard hits earlier in the frame, Hopkins led the Blazers on a go-ahead touchdown drive at the end of the quarter, calling his own number on a 1-yard touchdown run.
Fourth Quarter
UAB 21, Marshall 14
The Blazers had to hold on for dear life but come away with their fifth road victory of the season. Although leading by a single score throughout the final frame, UAB managed to outgain Marshall on offense, 40-39, and milk the clock with its powerful running game.
Marshall opened the final frame with a fresh set of downs but was unable to convert and relinquished control back to UAB. The Thundering Herd took over for its first full possession of the quarter with less than four minutes remaining in the game but Wells was intercepted by Grayson Cash at the 46-yard line of UAB with 1:31 to play.
UAB took over following Marshall’s initial punt and chewed 10:08 off the clock with a 16-play, 42-yard drive that ultimately resulted in a punt following a sack of Hopkins on third down. The Blazers took over for their second drive of the quarter following Cash’s pick and ended the game with a couple of kneel-downs.
Key Play: Cash’s interception of Wells with less than two minutes to play in the game.
Key Player: Hopkins had a gutsy performance in keeping the UAB offense on the field for 37:43 of game time.
