FAIRBANK, Iowa (KWWL) – The opening of the public pool is the unofficial beginning to summer. But with the pandemic, pools across the state are trying to figure out their next move.
It's not the water that is the concern. The CDC shows there is no evidence COVID-19 is spread through water in pools and spas due to the chemicals they are treated with. The concern is in how to enforce social distancing and continually sanitize shared surfaces, like eating areas.
The Fairbank Aquatic Center typically opens around Memorial Day, but the plans that were made in the fall to open this spring have been tossed. It's now a matter of when and how they can open and if they can even get the lifeguards they hired before everything started.
"They call, they're anxious, they're upset just like everybody else. They're certification classes have been canceled or postponed,” said Jason Kayser, Aquatic Center Board President.
Kayser said he has a letter sent to the governor's office asking for a temporary extension on lifeguard certifications. This would allow lifeguards who were certified last year to work this year without having to go to the training, many of which have been canceled.
The best case scenario would be opening the pool between Memorial Day or the first week of June, but Kayser said that's just not realistic at this point in time.
"If we're pushed back to the middle of June, there will be a pricing adjustment. If we can't open by the first week of July, we're just not going to open. It's just not feasible,” he said.
While remaining optimistic that they will open this summer, Kayser expects things will look different. Pool parties might not happen this summer or the concessions might be limited or closed. They're waiting on more guidance from the state as there are more questions than answers for city pools looking to provide some summer fun.
"We've got to look at the food service. We are a licensed restaurant. Will that happen? I don't know. I don't know if that can happen,” he said.
The pool is also utilized by the surrounding communities of Jesup, Redlyn and Oran. The Jesup swim team practices in the pool as well.
Kayser said they were hoping to hold a fundraiser to add an additional slide at the pool. That now might not happen or be delayed due to the complications of this season.
