Ex-Longhorn Scottie Scheffler isn’t looking to just have fun in his first Masters. He’s at Augusta to win. - The Dallas Morning News

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Scottie Scheffler arrived to famed Augusta National Golf Club for his first Masters on late Sunday night from the Vivant Houston Open where he finished tied for 32nd. He’s had inconsistent tournament finishes since his COVID-related withdrawal at the US Open in September, but the Dallas native seems ready to take on Augusta National.

Though he’s only played the course five times before this week, that doesn’t change his laser focus for this week.

“Obviously, the goal is to come here to win. I didn’t just come here to show up and have fun,” Scheffler said. “It’s a golf tournament. I’m here to do the best I can and hopefully win, and that’s how I’ll approach everything from here.”

That’s the kind of approach that almost got fellow Dallas native the green jacket at his Masters debut in 2014. Spieth as you remember played in the final group with the share of the 54-hole lead. Then as today, Fuzzy Zoeller’s 1979 Masters win as a rookie still stands. Scheffler’s coach of nearly eighteen years Randy Smith knows the magnitude of the Masters and what Scheffler is going for as a rookie, but keeps things in perspective as well.

“It’s another golf tournament. I know it’s the Masters, it’s is a huge situation but once again it’s still a tournament,” Smith said. “You want to stay in the moment as best you can and then see how you deal with the nerves come Sunday. You may on go down the road with a green jacket and still improve on what you did.”

Rain is expected Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday and Smith likes the sound of that for his long-hitting pupil.

“Honestly (the weather is) playing a little bit into his hands,” Smith said. “But with those greens no matter if they’re soaked they’re still going to be Augusta greens and the higher the ball flight coming in on many of those holes the better it is, and Scottie can hit it to the moon when necessary.”

Smith knows Scheffler gained some key major championship experience playing in the final group of the PGA Championship back in August when he finished tied for fourth.

Now, after having to withdraw from the next major-the U.S. Open-due to COVID, this will be the very next chance for the Highland Park standout to make noise in a major. Scheffler likes what he sees here so far.

“I think the approach on this golf course will suit my game,” Scheffler said, “just being able to hit it high and shape the ball different ways is something that’s really important out here.”

The Dallas native has played it five times before this week.

“I didn’t really know what to expect on how the course plays in tournament conditions, so it will all be pretty new to me this week,” Scheffler said. He played nine holes on Monday.

Scheffler’s caddie Scott McGuinness likes how Scheffler’s long game matches up with Augusta.

“I think Augusta suits him great,” McGuinness said. “He’s such a good driver of the ball and that will help him at Augusta.”

Scheffler’s sister Callie is also looking forward to watching on TV this week.

“We’re all very excited for and proud of Scottie,” Callie said. “It’ll be a fun week.”
