Lake Erie Crushers looking for host families: Short Takes on Avon, Avon Lake and North Ridgeville - cleveland.com

AVON, Ohio -- A few weeks ago, the Lake Erie Crushers released their 2021 baseball season schedule. This is a sure sign that spring is in the air and that the boys of summer will be back on the field after the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Crushers are currently accepting applications for host families. Hosting one of the baseball players is a great way for fans to become involved with the team. Host families can come in all forms, including singles, retirees and families with children.

Once the players arrive in the community in the beginning of May, they will start training for Opening Day, which is May 27. The players will have very little down time with spring training, long games and long road trips. All they require of their host family is to provide a warm living space, a roof over their heads and a welcoming home.

The regular season ends Sept. 12 (could be extended if the team makes the playoffs).

Host families also get access to an exclusive set of perks, including two ticket vouchers per game for as long as the family hosts a player. Families can use their vouchers as needed throughout the season.

They also receive one parking pass per family, a team-sponsored preseason event for all host families and players, an on-field recognition ceremony at the end of the season for the host families, discount coupons for the Fan Attic team sho; and season-long discounts on in-game concessions.

For more information, call 440-934-3636 or email the Crushers at info@lakeeriecrushers.com.

The Avon Lake Parks and Recreation Department follows the guidelines provided by the Lorain County Board of Health. Currently, children and staff will be required to wear face masks while attending camp. Class sizes are limited to 50 and social distancing will be in place.

The portions of class that are indoors will be held in a gymnasium where there is plenty of room to social distance. Temperatures will be taken as children arrive each day. Areas will be sanitized after each session.

Guidelines are changing daily from the Board of Health and camp officials will monitor on a daily basis.

Shout-out: Resident Mark Madere, owner of SpectraLight Photography, recently created a cool 360-degree interactive photo and video of the surface of Mars by NASA’s Rover -- the Perseverance.

One features the actual Martian sky. In the other, Madere replaced the sky using a photo of Trumpler 14 -- a glittering star cluster that contains a collection of some of the brightest stars in the Milky Way galaxy.

The images were captured by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. He is using the images for educational purposes. NASA is the source of the original content.
