Not even Jacob deGrom wants to face the Mets' lineup.
The best pitcher in the league spoke to reporters with six days until he takes the bump on Opening Day, and raved about the offense and the roster that he feels is ready to contend for a World Series again.
"I think every year coming in, my goal for the team, and looking at what we have, was to try to win a World Series. I think that's everybody’s goal," he said. "The pieces we added this offseason are definitely exciting, and we're looking forward to April 1 and playing full 162 and seeing where we're at. You probably ask mostly everyone on this team what their goals were previously, whether they were with us or not, I think that’s just part of being a competitor, you're always looking to win ultimate prize, and for baseball, that’s the World Series...
“I think whenever I really had a good look at [our lineup]... from top to bottom, thinking of if I was facing our lineup, that’s a tough lineup. That’s kinda how I look at it. Almost all the guys who are most likely gonna be starting were in [my last] game. So that was really cool to see, and definitely exciting. We’ve had a great group of guys, but the additions we made are definitely exciting, and looking forward to getting this thing started.”
The Mets' offense last season ranked first in batting average (.272), second in on-base percentage (.348), third in OPS (.807), and fourth in slugging (.459), and then they added Francisco Lindor.
But deGrom boasted confidence in the team's defense, which has been a question mark in recent years.
"I think we have a very good defense we’re gonna run out there. Everyone talks about the offense, but the game that's I’ve pitches, these guys have played great defense behind me. Looking forward to getting out there with them when they actually count," deGrom said.
DeGrom also has seen Noah Syndergaard in action as he is making his way back from Tommy John surgery, and said "it's been fun to watch."
"From what I’ve seen, it looks like he’s ready to pitch... It's definitely exciting knowing that we're gonna have him back in the rotation... Seeing his bullpens and stuff, it's been fun to watch," said deGrom.
The Mets' ace has notoriously not gotten much run support over the last three years - one would think that's bound to end this season, but that's not changing his approach.
"I think I still take same approach. I treat everything like it’s a 0-0 game," he said. "I’ve said before that I don’t like giving up runs. Even if we have a 10-run lead, I don’t wanna give up any runs. That’s my goal, to put up zeroes give us a chance to win."
