100 Years Ago: 1921

There was a large attendance of the young ladies of the domestic science class in Auburn at the electrical display given at the Auburn Chamber of Commerce rooms yesterday morning. This was followed in the afternoon by another large attendance of housewives of Auburn and Lewiston. This included an external and very interesting, as well as instructive, demonstration of electrical equipment for the home and Mrs. N. A. Carr of Boston and New York talked at length about the possibilities of electrical cooking and she even baked several dainty and appetizing dishes by the electric stove.

50 Years Ago: 1971

You can’t see much of it from the road but there’s a lot that has been accomplished during the long, cold, snow filled winter at the site of construction of a new Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) complex along East Avenue, Lewiston. When completed, there’ll be a collegiate-size swimming pool at the site, and other needed facilities. Groundbreaking took place in November.

25 Years Ago: 1996

With the swishing of the tail and soft nuzzle, Midora, a 4 year old Arabian greets a visitor to Fox Run Farm on Morrison Hill Rd. Her owner, Mary Batt of Fox Run Farm, explains Midora is in training and will be used for therapeutic horse riding when she is five or six years old. Four other horses, Midora’s pals, are well accustomed to carrying physically challenged as well as other riders. Still a new therapy field in this state with 12 or 13 centers in Maine, including Fox Run Farm. There are 450 centers in the U.S., with these numbers expanding yearly, Batt said. Therapeutic horseback riding began in Europe 50 years ago and is about 25 years old in this country. It’s an  expanding field of work and study whose roots tie in a time where horses were part of everyday life. People loved their animals and benefited from this closeness.
