Looking at the five classifications for Fall Season II football - Times Union

Fall Season II football will begin Friday with a seven-week schedule of games that were unable to be contested during the 2020 fall season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The configuration of each of the five classifications shows 12 teams each competing in Class A, B, C and D. The Class AA ranks features eight teams this season.

Back in November 2019, Shenendehowa (Class AA), Queensbury (Class B), Schuylerville (Class B), Stillwater (Class C) and Warrensburg (Class D) were the programs capturing Section II championships. Schuylerville and Stillwater each dropped down a classification.

This season, the teams winning will be considered classification winners. Normally, a team playing a level or two down from its assigned classification would be ineligible for postseason play. Because the titles being played for are not official sectional championships, all teams playing are eligible to compete for its assigned classification's championship in Week 7.

Here is a breakdown of each class the Fall Season II:

CLASS AA

The Empire Division is comprised of Guilderland, Saratoga, Schenectady and Shenendehowa. The Liberty Division features Bethlehem, Christian Brothers Academy, Colonie and Shaker.

Each team will have the other division in Weeks 1-4. In Week 5, the top team in each division will face the bottom team in its division and the No. 2 and 3 seeds will battle for the right to advance among the top four to compete for the classification title.

The highlight of the Week 1 schedule Friday pits perennial powers Shaker and Shenendehowa at Steuerwald Stadium.

CLASS A

The Capital Division consists of Albany, Amsterdam, Averill Park, Columbia, La Salle and Troy. The Grasso Division is composed of Ballston Spa, Burnt Hills, Mohonasen, Niskayuna, Queensbury and Scotia.

Each division will compete against the other teams inside its division through the first five weeks and the top two seeds will meet to determine which squads will compete for the title in Week 7.

Notable games in the opening week include Troy at La Salle and Ballston Spa at Burnt Hills.

CLASS B

Broadalbin-Perth, Glens Falls, Gloversville, Green Tech, Hudson Falls and South Glens Falls make up the North Division. Cobleskill, Holy Trinity, Hudson, Lansingburgh, Ravena and Schalmont comprise the Reinfurt Division.

Four of the six games in the Week 1 schedule will be considered scrimmages. The other two will feature opponents from different classifications.

CLASS C

The North Division has Corinth/Fort Edward, Fonda, Granville, Johnstown, Mechanicville and Stillwater competing and the South Division is made up of Catskill/Cairo Durham, Coxsackie-Athens, Hoosick Falls/Tamarac, Ichabod Crane, Taconic Hills and Watervliet.

Schuylerville, winner of the 2019 Class B title, opens up Saturday at Mechanicville.

CLASS D

The North Division is made up of Cambridge/Salem, Greenwich, Lake George/Hadley-Luzerne, Stillwater, Warrensburg and Whitehall. The breakdown of the South Division is Canajoharie, Chatham, Cohoes, Helderberg Valley, Hoosic Valley and Voorheesville.
