100 Years Ago: 1921

Cold, raw weather didn’t prevent a large attendance at the May day exercises on the Bates campus Wednesday afternoon. If the sun did not shine as brightly as might have been desired, the beautiful, many-colored costumes against the somber greenness of the mountain background gave a sufficient brightness to the arena to dispel the chill. This first May day exercise in the last several years was very successful.

50 Years Ago: 1971

Miss Juliann and Miss Sydney Knowles, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Neville Knowles of 264 Court St, Auburn, are among the contestants in the Miss Black Teen Age Maine Pageant which is being held Friday, at the Sheraton Eastland Motor Hotel, Portland. Juliann is a member of the sophomore class at Edward Little High School and Sydney is in her last year at Webster Junior High School. Both are talented dancers. There are six other contestants, from Portland, Bangor and Washburn, and the winner of this pageant, the first to be held in Maine, will represent Maine in the first Miss Black Teen Age America Pageant to be held at Atlanta, Ga. on July 28.

25 Years Ago: 1996

The Feeley Sisters, as the Andrews Sisters, the popular vocal trio of the ’40s, will present a program of swing era hits June 3 at the All Souls Chapel. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Donations are $3 a person. The Poland Extension group will serve free refreshments after the performance.
