Tennessee Vols appear to be looking to add immediate depth at key position - atozsportsnashville.com

The Tennessee Vols appear to be in the market for a transfer cornerback.

It certainly makes sense that UT would be looking to add a cornerback. The Vols’ depth at the position is thin at best.

For now, Tennessee has senior Alontae Taylor, junior Warren Burrell, and senior Theo Jackson as their top options. Redshirt sophomore Tyus Fields and redshirt senior Kenneth George Jr should also see significant playing time.

It obviously wouldn’t hurt to add another defensive back to the mix.

Earlier this week, Rivals national columnist Mike Farrell reported that Tennessee is a “major player” for Kansas cornerback Karon Prunty, a former three-star recruit who entered the portal last week.

Prunty, a Virginia native, wasn’t highly recruited out of high school, but he’s played extremely well at Kansas.

The rising sophomore started every game as a true freshman for the Jayhawks, compiling 26 tackles, nine passes defended, and an interception.

South Carolina is viewed as the leader for Prunty for now, but the Vols are definitely in the mix (along with Virginia and Ohio State).

Prunty, who is expected to visit UT this weekend, isn’t the only transfer cornerback that Tennessee is pursuing.

The Vols are also in the mix for former Alabama cornerback Brandon Turnage.

Turnage committed to Georgia in spring, but he wasn’t on the Bulldogs’ updated roster that was released last week.

“The more recent addition of Derion Kendrick by Georgia seems to have led Turnage to look for a different home, as he would like more of a guarantee at consistent playing time,” wrote Farrell.

According to Farrell, Tennessee was the first school to “pop up” for Turnage. Minnesota, Kansas State, TCU, Oregon State, and Illinois were in contact with Turnage before his commitment to the Bulldogs, so they could also still be factors for the redshirt sophomore.

We’ll see how all of this plays out in the coming weeks, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Volunteers add a cornerback to the roster in the not-so-distant future.
