Women's Golf Heads to Charleston Invitational Looking For Top Spot - Wheeling University Athletics

Wheeling, W. Va. – When they competed at the California University of Pennsylvania Invitational last weekend, the Wheeling University Women's Golf team finished in third place, 21 strokes behind The University of Charleston. As they make their way down to Charleston, West Virginia, they are hoping to overtake the Crimson Hawks at the University of Charleston Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.

The last time the Cardinals hit the course, it was a tale of two days at the California University of Pennsylvania. After day one, Wheeling sat in a tie for sixth place and placed fourth among Mountain East Conference (MEC) teams at the event. However, once Day two of the event was over, Wheeling found itself in third place and playing as one of the top teams in the entire tournament. Head Coach Sue Vail like the fight she saw from her girls and their ability to bounce back after a rough start.

Leading the way in California, PA. was junior Emily Holzopfel (Rayland, OH./Buckeye Local), who shot a 166 and finished seventh overall at the event. Holzopfel had a rough start to the event, shooting an 88 in the first round, but followed it up with a solid 78 stroke effort in the second round to score her first sub-80 round of the season. Another woman who started her collegiate career out strong was freshman Nicole Lincicome. Lincicome shot a 93 on the first day of the event and was the fourth-highest scorer on the team. However, she buckled down and came back with a strong 80 on day two and finished tied for 21st. The final Cardinal to finish in the top 30 was junior Zoila Herrera (Miami, FL./Coral Gables), who shot a 174 combined between the two days.

After finishing third in the annual MEC Women's Golf Preseason Poll, it was a big boost for the girls to come out and have success finishing second among MEC teams in their first event of the year. They finished the tournament 21 strokes behind the University of Charleston, but if they can put together a string of good days, they have what it takes to achieve their goal of being the top women's golf team in the MEC again.

History

Last season, the Cardinals competed in the Charleston Invitational in the spring, with the event being held on March 29th and 30th, 2019. While it may have been chillier than normal outside, the Cardinals were hot finishing in fifth place out of 13 teams. However, it was a big day for Holzopfel, as she finished the tournament tied for first place with a score of 149. She notched a 78 on day one of the event, followed by an even better 73 on day two to capture a tie of first place. She will once again look to lead Wheeling as they try and improve this season.

The Details
