Broncos game balls, notable Week 3 quotes following win over Jets and looking ahead to Week 4 versus Ravens - The Denver Post

Game balls, quotable and a look ahead following the Broncos’ Week 3 win over the Jets to improve to 3-0.

Game Balls

Broncos pass rush

Jets QB Zach Wilson was already out of his element; throw in a relentless Broncos pass rush that didn’t let up in the second half, and the result was a defense that had fun all game long. Linebacker Alexander Johnson got the party going with a 14-yard sack of Wilson in the first quarter. Then Shelby Harris, Von Miller and Malik Reed all had sacks in the second quarter, and Johnson added another in the fourth. New York lost 41 total yards on five sacks, and even when the rookie wasn’t going down, he was under constant duress in the pocket.

Tim Patrick

The Broncos signed him to the practice squad in 2017, and Patrick’s been bootstrapping his way to NFL relevancy ever since. That continued Sunday with five catches for 98 yards as Patrick abused Jets cornerbacks and asserted himself as a vertical threat. The Broncos threw at Patrick on their first two offensive plays, and he hauled them in, and also had a 31-yard catch in the fourth quarter that set Denver up at the goal line. With Jerry Jeudy on IR and KJ Hamler potentially sidelined going forward, Patrick must continue to be Mr. Reliable.

Broncos secondary

After picking off Trevor Lawrence twice in last week’s win over the Jaguars, the Broncos replicated that ball-hawking with a pair of interceptions off Wilson. No doubt aided by the pass rush, the secondary limited Wilson to 19-of-35 through the air with a piddly 42.6 rating. With the Jets driving into Broncos territory in the fourth quarter, Justin Simmons secured his first INT of 2021 by undercutting Wilson’s throw and nearly returning it for a touchdown. Later in the quarter, rookie Caden Sterns iced the win with an interception off a tipped pass that he took back for a 43-yard return. Wilson never looked comfortable in his reads.

Quotebook

Vic Fangio on team’s fast start in 2021: “We’ve been pretty damn solid for three weeks, both offensively and defensively… The schedule is (what it is). But that’s the way it is in the NFL — you eventually will play everybody (good), and you have to take care of business when you don’t. Look at (Super Bowl champion) Tampa Bay’s (11-5) record last year and see what I’m talking about.”

Fangio on Patrick’s big day: “He caught the 50-50 balls, caught the balls inside the numbers and ran with them. Tim’s a damn good NFL receiver.”

Fangio on near-capacity crowd: “When there was a lull in the action and they posted that there were (about) 3,900 no-shows and the people booed — well, maybe we’ll get those 3,900 in here next Sunday. The fans here are great, the atmosphere is great.”

Teddy Bridgewater on the Broncos’ confidence: “Now that we’ve had a taste of success, we want to stay there.”

Bridgewater on Denver’s secondary: “When I’m on the sideline and looking up at the scoreboard, every time the quarterback drops back, I’m yelling ‘Pick!’ Because this defense has that ability to change games, and you saw that today.”

Garett Bolles on injuries to starting guards: “When those guys (Graham Glasgow and Dalton Risner) went down, I felt like I had to step up. There’s all young guys in the middle, so I looked at (right tackle) Bobby (Massie) and said, ‘Hey, we’ve got to hold this down.'”

Up Next

Sunday vs. Ravens, 2:25 p.m.

Record: 2-1.

Week 2 result: Won 19-17 at Detroit.

Coach: John Harbaugh (14th year).

About the Ravens: After suffering a grinding overtime loss to the Raiders in the season opener, the Ravens bounced back with an impressive and gutsy win over the Chiefs in Week 2 and then a stunning triumph over the Lions on Sunday. Baltimore trailed 17-16 on its final possession but used a 4th-and-16 conversion then Justin Tucker’s NFL-record 66-yard field goal to win at the buzzer.
